What We Believe Previous Page

Preamble

Since it is the responsibility of Christians to give common testimony to their glorious faith, especially in the days of rejection of religious faith, the individuals making up this local church have established it as a body dedicated to the witness of the glory of God and the historic faith of the universal church. This dedication includes adherence to the truth set forth in the Articles of Faith.

Articles of Faith

This is not intended to be a complete statement of the doctrinal position of this church, but it is the statement of basic beliefs on which this church rests.

  • THE SCRIPTURES We believe that the Holy Bible as originally written is the verbal inspiration of God to Spirit-controlled men and, therefore, is truth. We believe that the Holy Bible is the center of unity for all Christians and the supreme standard by which all conduct, all creeds, and all opinions shall be tried. II Tim. 3:16-17, II Peter 1:19-21
  • THE TRUE GOD We believe that there is one, and only one, living, true God, an infinite and intelligent Spirit, the Maker and Supreme Ruler of Heaven and earth. He is inexpressively glorious in holiness and is worthy of all possible honor, confidence, and love. In the unity of the Godhead, there are three persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—who are equal in divine character. They execute distinct but harmonious roles in the great work of redemption. Ex. 20:2-3, John 5:6-8, I Corinthians 8:6, Rev. 4:11
  • JESUS CHRIST We believe that Jesus was begotten of the Holy Spirit in a miraculous manner and was born of Mary, a virgin. He is both the Son of God and God the Son. Isaiah 7:14, Matt. 1:18-25, Luke 1:26-35, John 1:14
  • THE HOLY SPIRIT We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person equal to and of the same nature as God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit was active in creation; restrains the evil one until God’s purpose is fulfilled; convicts of sin, of righteousness, of the judgment; bears witness of the truth of the Gospel in preaching and testimony; and is the agent in the new birth that seals, endows, guides, teaches, witnesses to, sanctifies, and helps the believer. Gen. 1:1-2, Matt. 3:11, Matt. 28:19, Mark 1:8, Luke 1:35, Luke 24:49, John 1:33, John 3:5-6, John 14:16-17, John 14:26, John 15:26-27, John 16:7-15, Acts 5:29-32, Acts 11:15-16, Rom. 8:14-16, Rom. 8:26 -27, Eph. 1:13-14, II Thessalonians 2:13-14, Heb. 9:13-14
  • THE DEVIL OR SATAN We believe in the personality of Satan, the unholy god of this age. He is the author of all the power of darkness and is destined to the judgment of an eternal justice in the lake of fire. Matt. 4:1-11, II Corinthians 4:3-4, Rev. 20:10
  • THE CREATION We accept the Genesis account of creation and thus believe that man came by direct creation of God and not by evolution. Gen. 1-2, Psalm 33:6-9, John 1:1-3, Col. 1:16-17
  • THE FALL OF MAN We believe that man was created in innocence under the law of his Maker but by voluntary transgression fell from his sinless and happy state. The consequence of man’s fall is that all are now sinners, not only by compelling nature but also by choice, under just condemnation without defense of excuse. Gen. 3:1-7, Gen. 3:23-24, Rom. 1:18-20, Rom. 1:32 , Rom. 5:10 -19
  • THE ATONEMENT FOR SIN We believe that the salvation of sinners is completely by grace through the mediation of Jesus, the Son of God. By the appointment of the Father, Jesus freely took upon Himself our nature yet was without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience and made full payment for sin by His death. By His voluntary substitution in the sinner’s place, He set an example of the just dying for the unjust. Christ the Lord bore our sins in His body on the tree, rose from the dead, and now is enthroned in heaven. He is in every way qualified to be a suitable, compassionate, and all-sufficient Savior. John 3:16, Acts 15:11, Rom. 3:21-26, I Corinthians 15:3-4, II Corinthians 5:21, Eph. 2:8-9, Phil. 2:5-11, Heb. 2:14, I John 4:9-10
  • GRACE IN THE NEW CREATION We believe that in order to be saved, sinners must be born again. The new birth is a new creation in Christ Jesus that is instantaneous, not a process. In the new birth, the one dead in trespasses and in sins is made a partaker of the divine nature and receives eternal life, the free gift of God. The new creation is brought about in a way that is beyond our comprehension. It is solely the power of the Holy Spirit in connection with divine Truth that secures our voluntary obedience to the Gospel. Proper evidence of the new creation shows in the holy fruits of repentance, faith, and newness of life. John 3:3, Acts 16:30-31, Rom. 6:23, II Corinthians 5:17-21, Eph. 2:1, Col. 2:13, II Peter 1:4, I John 5:1
  • JUSTIFICATION We believe that the great Gospel blessing that Christ secures for believers in Him is justification. Justification includes the pardon of sin and the gift of eternal life on the principle of His righteousness. It is given solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood, not in consideration of any works of righteousness that we have done. His righteousness is credited to us. Isaiah 53:11, Zech. 13:1, Acts 13:38-39, Rom. 5:1-2, Rom. 5:9, Rom. 8:1-2
  • FAITH AND SALVATION We believe that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the only condition of salvation. Acts 16:30-31
  • THE LOCAL CHURCH We believe that a local church is a congregation of immersed believers associated by covenant of faith and fellowship of the Gospel. It observes the ordinances of Christ; it is governed by His laws; and it exercises the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in it by His Word. Its officers, pastors , and deacons have qualifications, claims, and duties that are clearly defined in the Scriptures. We believe that the true mission of the local church is the faithful witnessing of Christ to all men as it has opportunity. We believe that the local church has the absolute right of self-government, free from the involvement of any hierarchy of individuals or organizations. The one and only Head of the church is Christ, through the Holy Spirit. It is scriptural for true churches to cooperate with each other for maintaining the faith and for the furtherance of the Gospel. Each local church is the sole judge of the measure and method of its cooperation on all matters of membership, of policy of government, of discipline, and of benevolence. The will of the local church is final. Acts 2:41 -42, Acts 15:13 -18, Acts 20:17 -28, I Corinthians 11:2, Eph. 1:22-23, Eph. 4:11-12, Eph. 5:23-24, Col. 1:18, I Tim. 3:15
  • BAPTISM AND THE LORD’S SUPPER We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water to show a solemn and beautiful picture of the crucified, buried, and risen Savior’s effect on our death to sin and our resurrection to new life. It is a prerequisite to the privileges of a church relationship. We believe that the Lord’s Supper is the commemoration of Christ’s death until He comes again. It should always be preceded by self-examination. Matt. 3:16 , John 3:23 , Acts 8:36 -39, Rom. 6:3-5, I Corinthians 11:23 -30, Col. 2:12
  • THE SECURITY OF THE BELIEVER We believe that all who are truly born again are kept by God the Father for Jesus Christ. John 10:28-30, Rom. 8:35 -39, Phil. 1:6, I Peter 1:3-5, Jude 1
  • THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE WICKED We believe that there is an essential difference between the righteous and the wicked. Those who through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and sanctified by the Holy Spirit are truly righteous. Those who continue in impenitence and unbelief are wicked in His sight and under the curse. This distinction holds for men both in life and after death. The righteous will receive the everlasting happiness of the saved; and the wicked will receive the everlasting, conscious suffering of the lost. Gen 18:23, Proverbs 14:32, Mal. 3:18, Matt. 25:24-41, Luke 6:20 -26, John 8:21 , Rom. 6:17 -19, Rom. 6:23 , Rom. 7:6, I John 5:19
  • CIVIL GOVERNMENT We believe that civil government is of divine appointment for the good order of human society. We are to pray for magistrates and conscientiously honor and obey them except in things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ex. 18:21-22, II Sam. 23:3-4, Dan. 3:16-18, Matt. 22:21, Acts 4:19-20, Acts 5:20, Acts 23:5, Rom. 13:1-7
  • THE RESURRECTION AND THE RETURN OF CHRIST We believe in the bodily resurrection, the ascension, the high priesthood, the Second Coming, the resurrection of the righteous dead, the change of the living in Christ, the throne of David, and the millennial reign. Matt. 28:6-7, Mark 16:6, Luke 24:2-6, Luke 24:39, John 20:27, I Corinthians 15:4, Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, Acts 1:9-11, Heb. 12:2, Rev. 3:21, I Tim. 2:5, Heb. 2:17, Heb. 5:9-10, Heb. 8:6, I John 2:1, John 14:3, Acts 1:11, I Thessalonians 4:16, Heb. 9:28, James 5:8, I Corinthians 15:42-44, I Corinthians 15:51-53, I Thessalonians 4:13-18, Isaiah 9:6-7, Luke 1:32, Acts 2:29-30, Psalm 72:8, Isaiah 11:4-5, Isaiah 32:1, I Corinthians 15:24-25, Rev. 20:6, Rev. 20:14
  • PRAYER We believe that prayer is a believer’s communion with God, including elements such as adoration, praise, thanksgiving, intercession, pleading, petition, and waiting upon God. True prayer, prayed in the Spirit and according to His will, is heard and answered by God. Prayer is not only a blessed privilege but also a positive command of God. We believe that if we regard sin in our hearts, the Lord will not hear and answer our prayers. Ex. 25:22, Psalm 66:18, Proverbs 28:8-9, Isaiah 59:1-2, Jeremiah 29:13, Luke 11:13, Luke 18:1, Rom. 8:26-27, I Thessalonians 5:17
  • MISSIONS We believe that the great commission to evangelize the world was given to the church by our risen Lord. This evangelization is the great mission of the church. Isaiah 6:8, Matt. 28:19-20, Mark 16:15 , Acts 1:8
  • SEPARATION FROM THE WORLD We believe that the saved are called to a life of separation from worldly and sinful practices. Rom. 12:2, I John 2:15-17, II Corinthians 6:14-18
  • SANCTIFICATION We believe that sanctification is the process in the will of God by which we are made partakers of His holiness. It is a progressive work that begins in the regeneration of salvation. It is carried on in the hearts of the believers by the presence of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God, prayer, self-examination, self-denial, watchfulness, and the practice of all godly duties. The sanctification of the believer will be complete at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Then, and only then, will we be sanctified wholly in body, soul, and spirit. John 17:17, I Corinthians 6:11, II Corinthians 3:18, II Corinthians 7:1, Phil. 1:5-6, I Thessalonians 4:1-10, I Thessalonians 5:23, II Thessalonians 2:13, Heb. 12:14-23, II Peter 1:3-12, II Peter 3:18, Rev. 14:5
  • THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE We believe that every Christian should seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The evidence of the Spirit-filled life will be seen in soul winning and in the fruit of the Spirit. Luke 11:13, John 4:14, John 7:37-39, Acts 1:8, Gal. 5:22-25, Eph. 3:19, Eph. 5:18, II Peter 1:4-11
  • THE SUPERNATURAL GIFT OF OTHER LANGUAGES We believe the purest form of speaking in unknown languages is explained in Acts 2:1-13. The miracle in Acts chapter 2 is that all men heard and understood in their own language. The modern-day use of tongues as an evidence of spirit filling is not indicated in Acts chapter 2.
