Christian discipleship isn’t the suppression of our desires; but rather a transformation of desires to acquire a taste for God and the things of God. God isn’t trying to overcome what your heart wants. He’s trying to change what your hearts want. His love for us starts the process. Through the gospel we “taste and see” that God sweetly satisfies our soul’s hunger. But one taste isn’t enough. The first taste makes you want more. Our love for God must be nurtured through habits that continually recalibrate our hearts away from this world’s gravitational pull. Today, we learn what it means for our hearts to acquire a taste for Jesus to be the fulfillment of our soul’s longings and not the empty calories this world offers.
